CPT 93306 represents a "complete" Transthoracic Echocardiogram (TTE). Because it is a highly comprehensive code, it contains massive NCCI bundling restrictions that frequently catch cardiology billers off guard.
What is included in 93306?
A complete echo (93306) inherently includes 2D and M-mode imaging, along with spectral Doppler (93320) and color flow Doppler (93325). You cannot bill 93320 or 93325 separately if you are billing 93306.
Complete (93306) vs Limited (93308)
If the provider only evaluates specific structures or performs a follow-up exam rather than a full complete examination of all four chambers and valves, you must down-code to the limited echo code 93308.
NCCI Edits
Do not bill 93306 with an EKG (93000) unless it was medically necessary to perform both on the same day for distinct reasons (append Modifier 59/XU to the EKG if justified).
