While 97110 is for raw strength and endurance, CPT 97112 (Neuromuscular re-education of movement, balance, coordination, kinesthetic sense, posture, and/or proprioception) is focused on the nervous system's control of the muscles.
When to Use 97112
You should bill 97112 for activities like:
- Balance training on a BAPS board or foam pad.
- Postural training and stabilization.
- Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF).
- Desensitization techniques.
Time and Constant Attendance
Like 97110, 97112 is a time-based code governed by the 8-Minute Rule. The therapist must have one-on-one, direct contact with the patient for the duration of the billed time.
NCCI Edits
Do not overlap the time. If an exercise improves both strength and balance simultaneously, you must choose ONE code (either 97110 or 97112) that represents the primary intent of the intervention.
