A "Virtual Check-in" is a brief (5-10 minute) interaction designed to determine if a patient needs to come into the office. It is billed using G2012.
Billing Requirements for G2012
G2012 can be performed via telephone, audio/video, or secure text messaging. It must be initiated by the patient (the patient reached out with a concern) and you must document their consent to be billed for the check-in.
The Bundling Rule
Just like the telephone codes, if the G2012 check-in reveals that the patient DOES need to come in, and they are seen within 24 hours (or the soonest available appointment), the G2012 becomes bundled into the E/M visit and cannot be billed separately.
NCCI Edits
G2012 also cannot be billed if it is related to an E/M visit that occurred in the previous 7 days. Use our NCCI tool to verify dates of service.
